Hit in the Mouth with a BB
What is an AirSoft gun?
Well, Dr. Kristen Berning learned yesterday when a 14 year-old boy came in with a broken tooth. Airsoft guns are used to play a game similar to paintball, but instead of shooting paintballs, small plastic BBs are used. The name "airsoft" is very misleading... the plastic BBs can be very dangerous and damaging! They are solid plastic and can be shot at speeds of over 400 feet-per-second... causing serious damage to the eyes or teeth if hit. Safety gear should absolutely include protective eyewear, but also sturdy clothing to protect the skin, and protective gear that covers the face and ears.

This boy actually found the piece of tooth after the BB hit him, and we were able to bond it in place, similar to how we bond porcelain veneers to teeth. The result: a quicker appointment for the patient, no local anesthetic needed, and the best possible looking restoration! :)
